Business Licenses

Anyone engaging in business activity in Alaska must have a state business license for that activity. If that activity involves the sale of tobacco, a tobacco endorsement is necessary as well. Business licenses are current for two years and cost $50. In addition to the state business license, professional or occupational licenses are necessary for some activities including health care, hairdresser, law, and construction among others.

The Petersburg Borough also requires certain businesses to register for Sales Tax through the Finance Office. Registration is free.

Business Planning

Before launching a new business, it is important to think through key aspects of what you would like to do. For example, evaluate market demand, ask yourself whether there is enough demand in the community for the product or service you plan to offer. Research expenses, for example, establish the monthly costs for owner salary, rent, utilities, insurance for your business. Consider how much you would need to sell to cover these monthly expenses and at what price.

There are resources available to assist you in navigating the planning process. The Alaska Small Business Development Center and Alaska SCORE provide consulting services to new and growing businesses in Alaska. SpruceRoot provides business coaching and hosts a regional business idea competition, Path to Prosperity. You may recognize the name of a past winner, The Salty Pantry.
