Workforce

The Petersburg labor market is largely seasonal with the dominant industry being seafood harvesting and processing. Summer employment by the two large processing plants can increase the labor force by about 30% each year. The seafood industry sector also employs skilled workers including welders, shipwrights, refrigeration and diesel mechanics, and electronics repair. Heavy construction, timber and mining firms are present and employ skilled workers.

Year around employment is mostly in government, education, healthcare, and retail trade. Local offices of state and federal agencies, local government, school district, and the medical center attract a variety of professionals to the community, including biologists, educators, doctors, nurses, and medical technicians.
