Building Permits & Inspections
A building permit is required to erect, construct, enlarge, alter, repair, improve, remove, convert, move or demolish any building or structure within Service Area 1. Building inspections outside of Service Area 1 are not required, but are available at the request of the property owner (building permit fees will apply.)
Building codes are designed to protect people and property by assuring safety in building construction and use. Local building codes are usually based on national standards called model building codes. Petersburg, along with most Alaskan communities and the United States, uses the International Residential Code and the International Building Code published by the International Code Council as the basis for our local building codes.
Once a building permit has been issued, a building inspection must be scheduled with the Building Official. Once the final inspection has been completed, a Certificate of Occupancy or Certificate of Compliance will be issued.
To learn whether your project will require a permit or if you need an inspection contact the Building Official.
