About Us

Petersburg Municipal Power & Light (PMP&L) is a municipally-owned electric utility providing electric service to approximately 2,000 customers on Mitkof Island. The utility's primary source of electrical energy is the Tyee Hydroelectric Power Project.

The Tyee project is part of the Southeast Alaska Power Agency (SEAPA) and can produce 20 megawatts of hydropower for the communities of Petersburg and Wrangell. PMP&L also has its own Blind Slough (Crystal Lake) hydro project supplying approximately 25% of its requirement.

These two hydro sources insure competitive stable rates will prevail in Petersburg. The utility also has stand-by diesel generation sufficient to supply customers in the event of an outage at Tyee.

Petersburg Municipal Power & Light is offering a voluntary registration for customers who are using home dialysis, oxygen concentrators or other electric medical devices and would like to be notified ahead of time when there is going to be a planned electrical outage in their area.  Advanced notice would allow the customer to find alternative means of power or treatment during an outage.
