Federal emergency relief legislation (CARES Act + CAA) both contained important tax provisions for business owners. Below are some business owners and self-employed should be aware of:

The adopted operating mill levy for FY22 is 8.68 which is an increase of 0.88 mill from FY21. The debt mill levy is 2.82 for FY22, which is a decrease of 0.88 from FY21. This brings the total FY22 mill levy to 11.5 which is the same as FY21.

The Petersburg Borough has two overlapping taxing areas (Area wide, Service Area 1) plus a separate debt service mill levy. Property can be subject to taxation in one or both of these levies plus the debt service mill levy.

An error was made during initial ballot preparation for the October 4, 2022 Municipal Election, and the name of a candidate for the Harbor and Ports Advisory Board was inadvertently omitted. 

If you absentee or early voted prior to Tuesday, September 27, 2022, and you wish to re-vote a ballot due to this error, please contact the Borough Clerk's office.

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,   the Petersburg Borough Baler Facility will be closed on Monday, January 16th and will reopen on Tuesday, January 17th.

Monday’s residential and commercial garbage routes will be picked up as normal on Monday.  Please have your carts curbside by 8 a.m.

The Community Development Department ensures the safety and maintenance of buildings, property, and neighborhoods through enforcement and public education of subdivision, zoning, and building codes in Service Area 1.

• Streets: Performs both summer and winter road maintenance including bridge repair, street grading/resurfacing, ditching, pothole repair and snow removal. The Streets Department is also responsible for storm drain maintenance, water and sewer main repairs and a wide variety of other tasks including some municipal building maintenance.
   

Welcome to the Petersburg Harbors.  The Petersburg Borough operates and maintains three harbors – North, Middle & South, a port dock, multiple loading facilities, storage areas, launch ramps, work floats and leased properties.

The Petersburg Economic Development Council, Inc. is a 501c4 nonprofit corporation formed in 2001. The PEDC leads economic development activity in the Petersburg Borough.

Leadership
The PEDC has a local board of directors composed of representatives of the business community, nonprofits, and local government. 

Meetings
The PEDC Board of Directors meets regularly on the fourth Thursday of the month at noon in the Assembly Chambers located in the Municipal Building. Meetings are open to the public.

If you absentee or early voted prior to Tuesday, September 27, 2022, and you wish to re-vote a ballot due to this error, you may do so at the polls on election day by requesting to re-vote your ballot. 

The Petersburg Borough Assembly adopted amendments to the zoning code creating standards for tiny house dwellings, detached accessory dwelling units, and multiple residential buildings on one lot.

The Petersburg Borough is excited to announce our new Permit-Ready Accessory Dwelling Unit (PRADU) Program!

This program is designed to streamline the process of adding an ADU to your property. Here's what you need to know:

Petersburg’s Public Works Department has an opening for a full-time Administrative Assistant I.  This position pays $21.95 per hour and has full benefits. Wage increases to $22.50 on July 1, 2024. The office of the Borough Clerk is the information link between the citizens and local government. From the Clerk's office, citizens can research records, request information and file complaints. The Clerk serves as staff to the Mayor and Assembly.

The Petersburg Borough was incorporated on January 3, 2013. The newly formed borough encompasses approximately 3,829 square miles (2,921 square miles of land, 908 square miles of water) and has a population of 3,189 (2020 estimate).

As per a revised Petersburg Borough Development Code being approved by the Borough Assembly on December 17, 2018, the following has been added. 

1.2.080

D. Notification Outside of Service Area 1. Notification of any structure or part thereof erected, moved, reconstructed, extended, enlarged, or otherwise altered outside of Service Area 1 shall be submitted to Borough Finance Director no later than 6 months following construction. No fee shall be assessed by the borough for reviewing or processing a building notification form.

The Petersburg Borough has an opening for a Building Official/Code Enforcement Officer. This position reviews plans, issues building permits and inspects buildings for compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Assists residents and businesses with land use permits and general borough code interpretation. Enforces building codes and zoning ordinances. Knowledge of building trades such as plumbing, electrical, structural integrity, and site preparation. Ability to inspect building projects for compliance with the requirements of the International Codes.

Customers are encouraged to continue submitting applications and building plans by email. Paper applications are available for pick-up/drop off outside the Community Development Office, First Floor, Municipal Building, 12 S. Nordic Drive. 

Customers may pay permit fees by credit card by calling 772-4425. Application fees also may be paid in person by cash, check, or credit card at the Finance Office, 2nd Floor, Municipal Building, 12 S. Nordic Drive. or by using the dropbox outside the Municipal Building.

Low Taxation.
The State of Alaska does not have a sales, inventory, gross receipts or personal income tax. The state does collect a Corporate Income Tax, which applies to the net taxable income allocated and apportioned to the state. More information.

Petersburg’s Parks & Recreation Department has a full time permanent Custodian position open, 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.)  The Custodian position is paid an hourly rate of $18.55/hour.

The EMS Branch responds to all medical emergencies, medevac transports, fire related calls, and provides assistance at the hospital.  The EMS personnel are trained from Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) through Emergency Medical Technician 3 (EMT-3) and regularly train twice per month on Wednesday. The EMS Coordinator serves as the training officer for the EMS Branch and works closely with the Medical Director to ensure the department stays in compliance with Federal, State and local pre-hospital requirements.

Public Works has an opening for the position for Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.  This is a regular full- time position with an hourly rate of $34.08 per hour. The Fire Branch responds to fires, vehicle accidents, bad smells, fire alarms, small fuel leaks, carbon monoxide alarms, earthquakes, aircraft emergencies, building collapses, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, explosions, civil disturbances, terrorist attacks, etc.  The firefighters regularly train three times per month on Thursday.

Petersburg’s Harbor Department has an opening for a Full-time Harbor Security Officer, scheduled for 2 night (11pm-7am) and 3 evening (3pm-11pm) shifts per week.

The Petersburg Medical Center (772-4291) consists of a Physician’s Clinic, 12-bed hospital, and long-term care facility. The medical center has five full-time physicians, diagnostic lab, chiropractic care, and hosts traveling specialists who frequently visit from throughout the Pacific Northwest. The public health nurse office (772-4611) also is located at the medical center.

Additional health care providers include two dental clinics, licensed acupuncturist, mental health counselors, and massage therapists.

Signs are $25 without a post to mount the sign on or $35 with a post. The volunteers will also help install the sign upon request. If interested, please contact the Fire Dept. at 772-3355. Signs can be posted on your home, fence, or signpost.

The available housing in Petersburg ranges from modern waterfront homes to remote off-the-grid cabins. While other communities have suffered a housing boom/bust cycle in recent years, the Petersburg market has been quite stable.
